Like every nation in the world. British society also has special figures, and signs that indicate who is British and what they look like. The names carry real important for British society. According to your name, or surname, it is clearly understood, where you are originally from. For example, in “surnames” ‘Mac or Mc’ indicate the Scottish or Irish origin of the people. ‘O’ like O’Brien is known, Irish. The huge number of surnames are known as “Wales” originated. The most common surname that I used in both England and Scotland is ‘Smith.’ It is the same for the names. One of the most common names, John, is used as “Ian” in Scotland, “Sean” in Ireland. This does not mean that they do not named their children John. Outside of their own countries, every nation has nicknames. For instance, Scottish people are called “Jock”, Irishmen are “Paddy” or “Mick” and Welshmen as “Dai or Taffy.” There is a critically important point for these nicknames. If someone uses these names in plural form, it is understood by the locals that he\she is not approaching friendly to them. In addition to the names. There are two figures. Britannia is one of them. It has two meanings. Firstly, it refers to the southern part of the British province. Romans gave this name to there. Secondly, it refers to a woman, who wears a helmet and holds a trident with her left hand.

The trident is a symbol of power over the seas. On the other hand, “John Bull” ,the second figure, is a fictional character. He has the same function as the American symbol ‘Uncle Sam.’ John Bull refers to ideal Englishness and English virtues. His appearance is a typical 18th-century country gentleman. In the old period of Britain history “Albion” was used by the songwriters or the poets to indicate England, Scotland, or the GB (Great Britain) at all. Great Britain was called Albion in “Roman, Celtic, and Greek” languages in the time they reigned. ‘Albus’ means white in Roman language. During the trip, they had from Europe to the South Coast of Britain, they saw the white cliffs around the ‘Dover’ and named that region as “Albion” to that region. Finally, the title of the United Kingdom covers five countries: England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland. These countries create together the United Kingdom, and the word “Briton” refers to its people. This word is used in official contexts. Also ‘Ancient Briton’ was used to define the people who were living in Southern England during the Roman occupation. In the same period, the terms “Caledonia, Cambria and Hibernia” were used to define Scotland, Wales, and Ireland respectively. As last and footnote “Erin” is a name which refers to Ireland. This word has a poetic meaning. The Emerald Isle has the same meaning.
